Trans guys make films & trans author book news

 

In the news this week we have two films about trans men, books from several trans authors, and a photo book about about the Koovagam festival.

Books & Authors

My google alerts often bring me news from India and this one is a lovely review article about Shino Cherian's Souls of Someone which documents his visit to the annual 18-day Koovagam festival where trans women ‘marry’ Lord Aravan in elaborate ceremonies. (Scroll.in)

The Big Idea: Tim Pratt - Genderfluid author Tim Pratt discusses the latest addition to their Nigh-Space series, The Jewel and the Comet, which they describe as "a multiversal romantic adventure first contact space opera." (Whatever)

In Emily St. James’ Beth March Returns From the Dead, Two Exes Confront Their Complex Past - Inspired by Little Women, Beth March Returns From the Dead, is "about how hard it is to be in a family, how wonderful it is to fall in love and how terrifying it is to be alive right now if you’re trans.” The novel is scheduled for release March 30, 2027, and is already available for preorder. Reviewed: ‘Night Night Fawn’ has a repellent narrator and a twist that will shake you - Reviewer Josh Cook may have convinced me to try a book that by it's description would normally turn me off, that is a protagonist of the type I would rather avoid in person and on the page. Night Night Fawn is Jordy Rosenberg's second novel, after Confessions of the Fox. (Cambridge | Somerville Independent)

I was going to link to a review of 'What’s So Great About the Great Books?' by trans author Naomi Kanakia, but the review had a whiff of TERFness to it, so instead I link to the book on Bookshop, because it looks intriguing. I love the subtitle of the book: Why You Should Read Classic Literature (Even Though It Might Destroy You). How might it destroy me? I want to know.

‘I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming’ Review - Film Critic Leslie Felperin calls the Ukrainian film about a trans man and his wife living through war "a nuanced, finely lined drama." It premieres in North America at the New York Film Festival which runs from Sep. 25 through Oct. 12, 2026. (Hollywood Reporter)

Sweet Milk Lake review – a rewarding film about a trans man mistaken for his twin brother - An Australian film from transmasculine film-maker Harvey Zielinski who also stars. (The Guardian)
